Flexibility is an often overlooked part of physical health. Stretching regularly can help you move more freely, ease stiffness from long periods of sitting and prepare your body for other activities. Best of all, it can be done almost anywhere with no equipment at all.

A Simple Daily Routine

A few minutes of gentle stretching each day can make a noticeable difference in how you feel. Move slowly, breathe steadily and never push into pain.

Hold each stretch for around twenty to thirty seconds and breathe slowly throughout. Stretching should feel like gentle tension rather than discomfort, so ease off if anything feels sharp or painful. Over time, you may notice that movements which once felt tight become noticeably easier.

  • Neck rolls and shoulder shrugs
  • Standing hamstring stretch
  • Hip flexor stretch in a lunge position
  • Gentle seated spinal twist

When and How to Stretch

Many people like to stretch in the morning to loosen up or in the evening to unwind. Before vigorous exercise, light movement such as walking or arm circles warms the muscles. After exercise, longer held stretches can help you cool down comfortably.

Consistency is the key to better flexibility. If you have an injury or a health condition, check with a healthcare professional before starting a new stretching routine.
