A favourite pair of jeans can become more comfortable and characterful the longer you wear it. Yet frequent hot washes and tumble drying can fade the colour and weaken the fibres. With a little care, your denim can stay in great shape for years.

Wash Less and Wash Gently

Denim rarely needs washing after every wear. Air your jeans out between wears and spot clean small marks. When it is time for a full wash, turn them inside out, use cold water and a mild detergent, and choose a gentle cycle.

  • Turn jeans inside out before washing
  • Use cold water to protect the dye
  • Skip the dryer and hang them to dry

Dark and raw denim benefits most from cold, infrequent washing, since the dye can fade quickly. Washing similar colours together also helps prevent unwanted transfer onto lighter clothes.

Store and Repair With Care

Fold jeans or hang them by the belt loops rather than cramming them into a full drawer. Small tears and loose buttons are easy to fix early, either at home or with a local tailor, and a quick repair can save a pair you love.

Giving your jeans a rest between wears helps the fabric recover its shape. Rotating between two or three pairs spreads the wear and keeps each one looking better for longer.

Caring for denim is mostly about doing less: fewer washes, lower temperatures and gentle drying. Your jeans will reward you with a better fit and a colour that ages gracefully.
