Houseplants add colour, texture and a sense of calm to a home. If you have struggled to keep plants alive in the past, the secret is often choosing forgiving varieties and understanding a few basics of light and watering.
Beginner-Friendly Plants
Some plants tolerate a range of conditions and the occasional missed watering. These are popular choices for new plant owners.
- Snake plant
- Pothos
- ZZ plant
- Spider plant
- Peace lily
Most of these plants cope well with average room temperatures and moderate light. They are a good way to learn the basics of plant care before moving on to more demanding varieties.
Get Light and Water Right
Check the light needs of each plant and place it accordingly, whether that is a bright windowsill or a shadier corner. Overwatering is a common problem, so feel the soil before watering and only water when the top layer is dry. Pots with drainage holes help prevent soggy roots.
Wipe dust from leaves now and then so plants can make the most of the light they receive. During the cooler months, growth slows, so most houseplants need less water than in spring and summer. Rotating pots occasionally also helps plants grow evenly toward the light.
Start with one or two easy plants and build your collection as you learn. Before long, caring for them will become a relaxing part of your routine.
